Norman High School

Band Room Storm Shelter Addition

Norman · Oklahoma

In the 2014 Bond, Norman Public Schools selected MA+ Architecture to design new additions and improvements for the Norman High School campus. The success of that project ultimately led to MA+ being hired again in the 2019 Bond, tasked with designing additional improvements to Norman High School, Norman North High School, and the Nancy O'Brian Center for Performing Arts.

For Norman High School, there were multiple project objectives included in the 2019 Bond: renovation of finishes throughout the existing Academic building, a new Multi-Sport locker room building for Softball, Tennis, and Cross Country, a new weight room addition to the existing football field house, and a new fine arts addition to the existing Academics building that also doubles as a storm shelter. The fine arts addition includes an approximately 10,000 SF storm shelter that can protect 1,600 occupants. The new storm shelter is dual-purpose and is divided into multiple functional spaces: a band room, a choir room, a shared office, and restrooms. The project is estimated to be completed in late 2021.
