Norman North High School

Band and Wrestling Addition Storm Shelters

Norman · Oklahoma

In the 2014 Bond, Norman Public Schools selected MA+ Architecture to design new additions and improvements for the Norman High School campus. The success of that project ultimately led to MA+ being hired again in the 2019 Bond, tasked with designing additional improvements to Norman High School, Norman North High School, and the Nancy O'Brian Center for Performing Arts.

For Norman North High School, there were multiple project objectives included in the 2019 Bond: renovation of the finishes throughout the existing Academic building, an addition to and renovation of portions of the north athletic building to provide locker rooms for Track, Cross Country, and Soccer, a new band addition to the Academic building that functions as a storm shelter, and a wrestling addition to the Academic building that also functions as a storm shelter.

The band addition storm shelter is approximately 5,500 SF, can protect up to 1,102 occupants, and functions primarily as a band classroom with restrooms, storage, and adjacent percussion storage space.  The wrestling addition storm shelter is approximately 2,500 SF, can protect up to 504 occupants, and functions primarily as a wrestling room with a locker room, shower, and restrooms. The project is estimated to be completed in late 2021.
